Welcome to our area guide, packed full of useful information and photos to help you plan your Devon holiday!

We have split the guide into sections, geographically, and you will find plenty of info and photos, as well as links to local towns, beaches and sites. The map below shows how we define the different areas of the South Hams, and is clickable. Below that, you will find a short introduction to each area.

  • Bigbury Bay
Great beaches on a wonderful, varied coastline, great for walking with many pretty villages offerring local facilities.

  • Dart Valley
Popular area, centred around the picturesque Dart Estuary, which links the bustling, historic towns of Dartmouth and Totnes.

  • Eastern South Hams
Rural area, great for a little more peace, but with excellent access to both the Dart and Salcombe Estuarys and their towns, and the beaches of Start Bay.

  • Salcombe Estuary
Famed for its wonderful sailing waters, with many twisting creeks weaving through the rolling Devon hills to the picturesque villages. The towns of Kingsbridge and Salcombe are poupluar local centres, and there are some wonderful beaches at the Estuary mouth.

  • Start Bay
Rugged and beautiful, with stark contrasts, from high steep clifts to unique, low-lying features such as "The Line" at Torcross. Good beaches, and easy access to Dartmouth and Kingsbridge, as well as many pretty villages.

  • The Edge of Dartmoor
Why not mix the stunning wild of Dartmoor with time at the coast and beach?

  • Western South Hams
Rural area, with three stunningly beautiful rivers running through. Easy access to Kingsbridge, Salcombe and the city of Plymouth, as well as the beaches of Bigbury Bay, make this area a great base.
